On Thursday, June 16th TCNJ’s Student Chemists Association and the American Chemical Society of Trenton attended a Trenton Thunder baseball game at Waterfront Park. Students, TCNJ faculty, and ACS members bonded over the game, the food, and the final fireworks show. While the night’s 3-2 loss to Harrisburg was a slight setback for the Trenton Thunders, the 5,974 spectators at the event still managed to have a good time. “I feel so honored to attend a college that has such an active and welcoming Student Chemists Association, ” says David Léon, a junior chemistry major at The College of New Jersey currently working with Dr. Michelle Bunagan for TCNJ’s MUSE program (Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience). “The baseball game and all of the many events that SCA sponsors during the academic year make the chemistry major even more fun and exciting and also help to keep us all sane!”
AT 6:30 pm on Tuesday, November 16th, the SCA hosted its first annual Potluck Dinner. Students and faculty each brought in a dish to share with the other diners. Foods ranged from chocolate cake to lasagna. While the food was quite scrumptious, the event was also a wonderful opportunity for the chemistry faculty and students to bond. It was a great time! Below are photos from the dinner:
Todd is planning a physics trip! Below are all the details in case you didn’t get the other email sent out:
Physics Club is taking a trip to Horiba in Edison, NJ. This is happening on Wednesday, November 17th. We will meet around 12:30pm and leave at 1pm. We estimate to be back by 5:30 at latest. Horiba is a forensic lab and spectroscpy/spectrometery lab. We will get a tour of the facility and what they have to offer.
-Please email email@example.com by Wednesday Novemeber 10 so we can get a feel to how many people are going as we have to drive there.
There will be a student-faculty potluck dinner on November 16th in room 121 at 6PM. Originally it was scheduled for November 23, but due to the fact that many students will be going home Tuesday night for break, we moved it to the week before. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are attending! There is a food sign up in the chemistry computer lab and we want everyone attending to bring something for the potluck!
On Saturday, October 9th, the SCA participated in TCNJ’s annual Community Fest. From 10 to 2 pm, children and adults of all ages mixed hydrogen peroxide with soap, food coloring, and yeast, to create “elephant toothpaste” (Dr. O’Connor’s idea). The children especially had a good time trying out the “mad scientist” role, and a few even stated that they hope to be a chemist one day. Great job, SCA!

National Chemistry Week (NCW) is a community-based annual event that unites ACS (American Chemical Society) local sections, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. This year’s theme is “Chemistry-it’s Elemental!”
The mission of National Chemistry Week is to reach the public, particularly elementary and secondary school children, with positive messages about chemistry to:
- Make a positive change in the public’s impression of chemistry;
- Promote a mechanism for effectively mobilizing ACS local sections; and
- Motivate the ACS membership through local section activities.
The TCNJ SCA chapter will be participating in National Chemistry Week this year by teaching students at local schools about chemistry. If you’re interested in volunteering, see Dr. Chan or send us an email at email@example.com.
For more information on National Chemistry Week or ACS, visit www.acs.org/.
Awesome video, right? The SCA will be manning a table at Community Fest (October 9th) from 10 AM to 2 PM. We need a minimum of 5 people to sign up to help with the experiment (elephant toothpaste, watch above video). We also need 16 oz plastic bottles. If you have any, you can drop them off in the chemistry office on the first floor. If you are interested in helping out on that Saturday, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you placed an order during SCA’s goggle sale, the shipment has arrived and you’re welcome to pick up your pair in the Chemistry office. Also, we’re well stocked with our “I’m on a Boat T-shirts.” Each shirt is $12, available in orange or lavender. For more information email us at email@example.com
Chemistry clubbers enjoy the delicious pizza given out at the SCA meeting on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.
We need volunteers for the Community Festival on October 9th from 10 am to 2 pm. We’ll be making Elephant toothpaste!
Also, our goggles have been shipped and we’re well-stocked with our famous “I’m on a boat” shirts. We’ll also be purchasing lab coats, which we hope to decorate. If you’re interested in purchasing any (or all!) of the previously-mentioned items, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The career fair is THIS FRIDAY! We recommend that you attend and get some ideas as to what you hope to do in the future (grad school, industry, etc).
